I am not quite sure what to say. I usually have some sort of emotion after watching a film. But, not in this case. The acting was good. And the scenery was amazing. But, the rest was lost somewhere. And it certainly wasn’t here.

Will Shepard (Ben Foster) an American map maker. Is on assignment in Armenia. In a local diner Will strikes up a conversation with a young woman. Gadarine (Lubna Azabal) is local woman with a talent at photography. After parting ways that morning. They meet again at a social gathering. When Will is sent to another part of the country. Garadine tags along. And so the love story begins.

I understand where director Braden King was going with this film. But, it moved to slow. It also didn’t develop the characters enough. And it relied to heavily on visual rather than dialogue and content. I would have to give this film a

Goin the distance

Going the distance trailer

In another give, take movie weekend. We went to see this film. Although I wasn’t sure what to expect based upon the commercials. I knew it wasn’t going to be great. It looked like the director was trying to film it much like “500 days of Summer”. Which in my opinion was great. But, unfortunately he failed.

The film takes place in New York and San Francisco Bay Area. Garrett (Justin Long) a non-committal relationship junkie. Just broke up with the latest gal. When at a bar to drown his sorrows one more time. He meets Erin (Drew Barrymore). They hit it off and head back to his place. What takes place is your typical romantic comedy cliche’. They fall in love. But, Erin has to go back to Stanford to get her graduate degree. Leaving them in a long distance relationship. Several flights back and forth and some comedy relief from Dan (Charlie Day). Garrett’s roommate. The film follows your typical storyline.

Two things I got from this film. Charlie Day (It’s always sunny in Philadelphia) is comedy gold. And Drew Barrymore is not looking so good these days. I say wait for cable.

The Switch

The Switch Trailer
Like all relationships. There is give and take. So, when I chose to see “The Expendables” last week. I knew I was due to see a “Chick flick”. When my better half had the flick pick in her court. I knew it was going to be “The Switch”. “Two tickets for the 7:30 showing. Please.”
The film starts 7 years earlier in New York. Where we find Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) and Wally (Jason Bateman) best of friends. Kassie desires to have a baby by artificial insemination. Wally is trying to convince her not to. Stating great cons. But, never confessing his love for her. The best con. Kassie is going through with it. Despite Wally’s objections. She finds herself a donor who matches all the qualities she desires. And has a insemination party. (Don’t ask, Very bizarre). While party is in full swing. Wally gets hammered and stumbles into the restroom. Where Roland’s (Patrick Wilson) sperm is stored. And of course things go wrong. Wally accidentally dumps the fluid down the drain. So, like any rational drunken male would do. He filled the cup with his own seed. The next morning Wally is unaware of his actions. And months pass and Kassie finds herself pregnant. She decides NY is not a place to raise a child. So, she decides to move back to Minnesota.

Fast forward 7 years now. Kassie decides to move back to New York with her son Sebastian (Thomas Robinson). Kassie introduces Sebastian to Wally. And Wally notices some of his quarks in Sebastian. But, still has no idea what he had done 7 years earlier. All the while Kassie is beginning a relationship with Roland. The man who is suppose to be the father. As the time passes. Wally slowly remembers the events of that fateful night. I will leave it there. You figure the rest out. Or go see it.

I must admit. I enjoyed it. I thought both Wally and Sebastian stole the show. If it wasn’t for them. I may not have enjoyed it. It is not an over the top romantic film. Subtle in that department. But, strong on emotions of a father son relationship. Which won me over. So, if your better half chooses this on your date night. Smile and know I give it a

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day Trailer
OK. Lets be honest. This film was packaged way too neatly. Hollywood is losing creativity on a daily basis. So, they decided to grab a few of Hollywood’s best eye candy. Write some fluff of a script. Throw in some flowers, and a clean looking Los Angeles. And put it out on a Hallmark holiday. So, couples can go and share in some fantasy of love and lies. Then leave the theater with questions of “Why don’t you do those things?” echoing in your now coma like existence.
Do I dare give you the storyline? Boy loves girl. Girl loves boy. Boy and girl get heart broken. Then realize they should be together. Add that with some phone sex, a politically correct gay lifestyle, a young love scenario and you have a terrible version of “Love Actually”.

Now, I am fully aware the female viewers will have a different take. But, all in all it was a mediocre film. Ignore the fact that it is Valentine’s Day. The need to show your love on one particular day is absurd. Love should be a running theme in your life everyday. Wait for DVD or forget it exists!

love happens
Love Happens Trailer
Love happens is about a widower whose book about coping with loss turns him into a best-selling self-help guru. On a business trip to Seattle, he falls for a woman who attends one of his seminars, only to learn that he hasn’t yet truly confronted his wife’s passing. I like the actors in this film, but this a romantic comedy without enough comedy. I was expecting more from the story line but I was ultimately left with the feeling that I could take or leave this film.
I give this movie a WTF

All About Steve Trailer

Convinced that a CCN cameraman (Bradley Cooper) is her true love, an eccentric crossword puzzler (Sandra Bullock) trails him as he travels all over the country, hoping to convince him that they belong together. Bradley Cooper’s paranoia towards Sandra Bullock because he thinks that she is a stalker is actually pretty funny and Sandra Bullock plays her Character well. I wasn’t expecting much out of this film and it was pretty entertaining. I liked it but it is definitely a rental…

I give it a WTF.

Two Lovers

Two Lovers Trailer

A solid dramatic film about a thirty something that needs to let go of a past relationship and is confronted by Two Lovers. Joaquin Phoenix gives a strong performance that is painful at times and never really apologizes.  This is a fresh take of yes a “love triangle” but really, a fleeting sociopath that learns very little about himself or relationships.  This film works because of the nuances the director and actors bring to the screen.

So, mild F-YA
